Best PS3 games in 2026: what still holds up (and why)

Original PlayStation 3 console (PS3)

The best PS3 games in 2026 are the ones you can pick up today and enjoy without feeling like you’re wrestling with an old console. The PS3 has reached that sweet spot where it’s old enough to feel nostalgic, but not so old that everything plays like a museum piece.

Some games from that era do show their age, but a handful still feel properly modern because the fundamentals are strong. Great pacing, confident art direction, and systems that simply work still matter more than raw resolution.

If you want a bit of context on the hardware and its different models, the PlayStation 3 overview is a handy refresher. Then we’ll get to the good stuff.

Best PS3 games in 2026 that still hold up

The Last of Us

It almost feels unfair including The Last of Us, because Naughty Dog was squeezing the maximum out of the hardware by the end of the generation. Even so, what stands out now isn’t just the presentation. It’s the restraint. It doesn’t drag, it doesn’t waste your time, and the character work still lands.

Red Dead Redemption

If atmosphere is your thing, Red Dead Redemption is still a belter. The shooting can feel a bit of its time, but the world-building, the music, and the sense of place are strong enough that it quickly stops mattering.

Metal Gear Solid 4

Metal Gear Solid 4 is unapologetically itself. It’s big, ambitious, and slightly bonkers. It’s also a reminder of an era where major exclusives could be confidently weird, and that’s something I genuinely miss.

Demon’s Souls

Going back to Demon’s Souls is a proper history lesson, but it’s still a great play. It’s rougher around the edges than later Souls games, but the atmosphere and the tension are spot on.

Journey

Journey has aged beautifully. It’s short, gorgeous, and it knows exactly what it’s trying to do. If you only play one game from this list and you want something that sums up why PlayStation exclusives used to feel special, make it this.

Where to start

If you want an easy win, start with Journey. Then pick your flavour. The Last of Us if you’re in the mood for a story. Demon’s Souls if you want something with teeth. After that, Red Dead and MGS4 are perfect “settle in for the evening” games.

After the PS3 session

On this site we also keep up with modern PlayStation, so if you fancy something current afterwards, have a look at our latest PS Plus round-up or what we thought of PlayStation Portal.

For official updates and wider platform info, the PlayStation site is still the best place to start.
